Boston visit of JUAN SEBASTIAN de ELCANO, 370' tall ships from Spain

The 4-masted, 370' top-sail schooner JUAN SEBASTIAN will visit Boston, June 13th-21st, 2010.

Below, her appearance in Valparaiso, Chile in April 2010 as part of the VELA SUD AMERICA regatta.

Built in 1927, with a design from famed yacht designer Nicholson, JSDE is one of the most elegant tall ships in the world.

The JUAN SEBASTIAN de ELCANO, a 4-masted top-sail schooner of the Spanish Navy will be calling on the Port of Boston and berthed at the World Trade Center, One Seaport Lane, Boston, MA 02210 from June 13 to June 21, 2010. There will be public boarding and viewing of the ship on Wednesday June 16 from 3:30-4:30 pm , Friday from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm, Saturday June 20th from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm and on Sunday June 20th from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm with final visiting hours on Sunday from 3:30 pm – 6:00 p.m. Naturally times are subject to change.

Portuguese fishing schooner, SANTA MARIA MANUELA, sister to CREOULA

The 3 surviving fishing schooners of the great Portuguese fishing fleet of the early 20th century have been brought int o a joint project of restoration. The SANTA MARIA MANUELA and ARGUS have been purchased by the fishing company, Pascoal , and are being restored.

CREOULA is the 3rd schooner in the set.

In 1769, a long-boat of 14 men was lowered into the "lost channel" from the H.M.S. ONONDAGA, and were never found. The event took place on August 14th, 1760.

Bulgarina barquentine KALIAKRA --needs trainees

The Bulgarian barquentine, KALIAKRA, announced an energetic sailing schedule and participation in the Atlantic Challenge for 2009, including 2 trans-Atlantic crossings. It has berths for trainees, and adult guests. KALIAKRA has participated in a number of ASTA and STI tall ships race series.

KALIAKRA is a steel-hulled, 160' barquentine that was built in 1984, and refitted in 1992. Her home Waters are the Black Sea, and her homeport is Varna, BULGARIA.

The hull for the new sailing school ship, OLIVER HAZARD PERRY, arrived in Newport, RI on October 24th. After a journey from the Lake Ontario, through the Erie Canal, and up the east coast, the much anticipated steel hull arrived at her new home. Built in Ontario for another project the replica HMS DETROIT, the new project, the OLIVER HAZARD PERRY, intends to establish a Rhode Island based project which will complete the vessel to a proposed lenght of 205', and OHP will serve as a platform for sail-training, and a classroom for young people. Intended to be a working ship, the Foundation hopes to keep her busy on the seas for 35 to 40 weeks each year.

An extensive curriculum of sailing classes, semesters at sea, and day sails on Narragansett Bay will focus on historical, maritime, oceanographic subjects.

Bart Dunbar over sees the arrival of OHP's hull in Newport, Rhode Island.

The Board of Directors of the new sail school ship foundation, the OLIVER HAZARD PERRY, relieved, now that the hull has arrived, and the construction can begin, and the final phase of fund-raising.

This new Dutch brig was launched on 2 June 2008. She had 7 m added to her original length, and her stem bow was replaced with a clipper bow. MORGENSTER can accomodate 44 overnight passengers. Heer homeport is Den Helder, Netherlands.

The 2 clipper ships, CISNE BRANCO (white hull)

and STAD AMSTERDAM met in Den Helder

on August 22nd, 2008.

Both clippers were built in Amsterdam, 1999-2000, but had not visited the same port at the same time since thier launches.

Captain from CISNE BRANCO and STAD AMSTERDAM celebratged the occasion with toasts,

and and the sharing of "sea tales".
