Tall Ships Nova Scotia

The last of the ports for ASTA's tall ships challenge 2007 will be Halifax, Nova Scotia. A favorite port of the tall ships, Halifax is planning an extended festival from July 13th-23rd, with many vessels expected over the time-period.

Recently the Halifax committee unveiled a logo for the festival and a webpage.

My friend and the former 1st mate on BALTIC BEAUTY, Gerd Slowy lives in Straslund, GERMANY,a nd often volunteers on the restoration of the original GORCH FOCK, formerly the TOVARISHCH. Colombian tall ship GLORIA to join fleet

The Colombian barque GLORIA, the sail-training vessel of the Colombian Navy, will join 21 other tall ships for the festival in Newport entitled, Tall Ships Rhode Island. The fleet is being assembled in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of the War Command College in Newport.
Several Captains and Admirals in the Colombian Navy have been trained at the War College at the Naval base in Newport.

In addition to GLORIA, the other vessels include:

the PRINCE WILLIAM, a 195-foot brig from London; and the DEWARUCI, a 191-foot barque from Indonesia.

The other 19 Tall Ships are the HARVEY GAMAGE from Watch Hill, RI; the PROVIDENCE from Providence, RI ; the POINCARE, the FORMIDABLE and the SPIRIT of MASSACHUSETTS, all from Boston; the ALABAMA from Martha’s Vineyard; the FRIENDSHIP from Salem, Mass.; the BOWDOIN from Castine, Maine; the PRIDE of BALTIMORE II from Baltimore, MD; the VIRGINIA from Norfolk, Va.; the ROYALISTE from San Francisco, Calif.; the FAIR JEANNE and the BLUENOSE II, both from Canada; the SPIRIT of BERMUDA, Bermuda; the CISNE BRANCO from Brazil; the URANIA from the Netherlands; the GORCH FOCK II from Germany; the PICTON CASTLE from the Cook Islands, New Zealand; and the TARANGINI from India.

Japanese tallship KAIWO MARU II

The Japanese, 4-masted, 367' barque KAIWO MARU II is one of the tall ships that might be part of the ASTA tall ships challenge of 2008 on the west coast.

Recently I received the correct url and e-mail address for the ship from Kazu Nakayama.

KAIWO MARU II is owned by the National Institute for Sea Training, the same organization which owns and operates NIPPON MARU II, the sister-ship. KAIWO MARU II is operated by the Seafarers Education Development Association, and is allowed to take civilians as paying guest and trainees.

yacht FAZISI

An aluminum sloop, built in the former Russian state of Georgia, and now owned by a group of Polish yachtmen from Chicago who will sail the FAZISI to the Baltic for the tall ships races and festivals in Stockholm and Szczecin ?
Too fabulous to believe, well, check it out.

FAZISI is an 82' sloop, operated by members of the Joseph Conrad Yacht Club in Chicago,

schooner CAPITAN MIRANDA

The 3-masted staysail schoooner of the Uruguyan Navy, CAPITAN MIRANDA, is scheduled ofr one of the ports of tall ships Mediterranean, Alicante. Not other details of her cruise in 2007 have been released.

schooner GEDANIA

The 2-masted schooner GEDANIA, which has been restored, and refitted extensively over the last decade is sailing again with young trainees, and operating in conjunction with the POGORIA and the Sail Training Association of Poland.
If I can read there webpage correctly, the GEDANIA will be participating in the STI races in he Mediterranean in July, and the STI tallships race from Stockholm to Szczecin in early August. GEDANIA was one of the surprise additions to the tall ships fleet visiting the US in 1976, having sailed up from Anartica, and joing the fleet in Hamilton haroubr before visiting Newport, New York, and Salem and Boston Massachusetts in the bicentennial year, 1976.

After retiring from oceanogrpahic explorations, the GEDANIA was refitted, her double hull removed, and an additional 10 feet added to her midsection, to accomodate a larger crew of trainess.

MIRCEA, sail-training barque from Romania

MIRCEA, recently restored by the Romanian Navy, will be participating in the tall ships races in the Mediterranean the summer of 2007.

MIRCEA is one of the 4 sail-training barques built in Germany in the 1930's; the other four now being, EAGLE (USA), SAGRES II (Portugal), and the GORCH I (being restored in Straslund, Germany.)

TARANGINI, sail-training barque of the Indian Navy

For the ASTA challenge of 2007, the Indian Navy's barque, TARANGINI will be visiting the east coast in May-June-July 2007. The TARANGINI is a 177', 3-masted barque, built in 1997.

The launch of the schooner, SPIRIT of SOUTH CAROLINA has been scheduled for March 3rd, or 4th, 2007.

he tall ship of the Royal Malaysian Navy, TUNAS SAMUDERA, will be making a 412 day circumnavigation to the tall ships events in the Baltic this summer, 2007.

TUNAS SAMUDERA is a 44m brigantine.

Oct. 29, 2006, Golden Gate Tall Ships Society

On October 29th, approximately from 7 PM to 8 PM, there will be a sldie-show on tall ships sponsored by the Golden Gate Tall Ships Society at the Sausalito Yacht Club. The hour-long show will focus on Class A tall ships, and participants int he west coast tall ships challenge of 2005. The speaker will be Thad Koza.

The slide show will be an adjunct to the opening of a tall ships photogrpahy exhibit at the 1st Presbyterian Church on Bridgeway in Saulsalito, sponsored by the Golden Gate Tall Ships Society.
The exhibit will open onthe afternoon of Ocotber 29th.
