The neatly trimmed brig FRITHA has found a new home in Newport, RI. Now being operated by the Northeast Martime Institute she homeports in Newport.

Seen here, she is hosting a party of supporters of ASTA for their annual fund-raiser sail on Narragansett Bay, last Saturday, June 17th.

The Pell Bridge, connecting Newport and Jamestown is in the background. More details on NMI to follow.

schooner MALABAR

An interesting book on one of the last voyages of the MALABAR out the Great Lakes has been written by Jerry Dennis. Entitled

The Living Great Lakes

, the book which I recently discovred on my visit to the Big Rapids Library, documents the voyage of MALABAR out of the Great Lakes, and to her new home in Florida//Caribbean.

update on FRYDERYK CHOPIN

I have been informed by Terry Davies of ClassAfloat, that his organization has chartered the CHOPIN for 2 years in their transition to Lunnenberg, and the sale is still being negotiated.

FRYDERYK CHOPIN sold

It appears that the Polish brigFRYDERYK CHOPIN has been sold to ClassAfloat. ClassAfloat in turn has relocated to Lunenberg, Nova Scotia, where Is will have a permanent land base on a restored academic campus, which will be come the base for operations of both the FRYDERYK CHOPIN, and the CONCORDIA.

ROYALISTE in Great Lakes

The ROYALISTE from Sausalito, California has made the "voyage" from the Pacific to the Great Lakes. Presently at the Whiskey Island Marina in Cleveland, Gary Bergman's crew is preparing ROYALISTE for the Great Lakes Challenge ports. In addition, Gary is hoping to schedule visits to other ports on the lakes.

ROYALISTE will be participating in the "Battle of Plattsburgh" on Lake Champlain in September.

Hi,

Back from the exhausting trip, though lots of fun in the midwest. Drove over 3,400 miles,from Fairport Harbor, Ohio, To Alpena Michigan, to Big Rapids, Michigan, to Chicago, up to Green Bay, Wisconsin, and back to Chicago, with lots of stop-overs in between. Much to report and to update, just glad to be back home--if only to stop long enough to run a few cycles through the washer and dryer. Look for more on a daily basis. Fair winds, tk

STAD AMSTERDAM, the 28th

The winds were not anymore co-operative on Friday the 28th, as the STAD AMSTERDAM went down river and back on a day sail. The winds were from the north, and did not allow sails to be set. Hopefully, another time, a different result. It was a time to see "ground zero", however, as they began work on the new Freedom Tower on Friday.

STAD AMSTERDAM & NYC

The winds were not co-operating when the STAD arrived in New York harbor on Monday, April 24th, nor when she went on a sunset cruise down river to the Verrazono bridge on Tuesday.
STAD has berthed at Pier 62 this year--next to Chelsea piers, and a more hospitable setting for the clipper ship, and her crew. Attached are a couple pf photographs taken of STAD as she entered, and as she passed "ground zero" on Tuesday.

ERNESTINA & CLEARWATER

Gregg Swanzey wrote yesterday updating the situation on the schooner ERNESTINA, and urging people to write to their legislators in Massachusetts to reinstitute the funding which was so vital to the ERNESTINA's certification and sailing programs. Gregg also informed that he has taken the position of Executive Director with the CLEARWATER organization, which will have an energetic sailing program in 2006.

the DAR, west coast, 2008

2 friends, who ran out of enough time for schedules and deadlines in 2005, have been working hard and early to facillitate a west coast visit of the Polish sail training ship DAR MLODZIEZY in 2008. So far, they are encouraged by preliminary, positive responses from the DAR, and the Maritime Academy in Gdansk. Though it is early, a lengthy trip like the one that will probably be part of a circumnavigation for the DAR requires plenty of lead-time.

pilot schooner ROSEWAY

The pilot schooner ROSEWAY which has undergone an extensive refit, and incorporated several sail-training//educational programs into her mission is planning to return to Boston harbor where the pilot-schooner, then named PILOT, served for over 35 years.

Her operational base recently has been Camden, Maine, but in May 2006, ROSEWAY will be operating from Rowe's wharf on the Boston harborfront, offering day sails and sailing programs.
