GLORIA arrives in Newport for tallships rhode island


The Colombian barque, GLORIA, arrived in Newport for Tall Ships Rhode Island, which starts ont he 26th.

ALso sailing into the harbor on Tuesday were the schooners: VIRGINIA, SPIRIT of MASSACHUSETTS, BLUENOSE II, and PRIDE of BALTIMORE !!.

Columbian barque GLORIA and schooner AMISTAD


Both GLORIA from Columbia and the schooner AMISTAD from CT could be seen in the east passage off Newport Rhode Island, as they arrived a couple of days early for Tall Ships Rhode Island.

AMISTAD was built in Mystic, CT, and homeports from New Haven, CT>

Captain Bergman and the ROYALIST attended the festivivities of Sail Virginia 2007 in June.
Both the Captain and the ROYALIST had suffered set-backs but are on the road to recovery.

schooner BOWDOIN


Schooner BOWDOIN was initially an Arctic research vessel. Built in 1921, BOWDOIN made 26 voyages beyond the Arctic circle between 1921 and 1954. She is now owned and operated by the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine.

Dutch Navy sail-training ketch, URANIA


The new URANIA was built fours years ago (2003) to replace the 3 times Cutty Sark winner which had been built in 1928. The new URANIA trains future Dutch naval officers for the ROyal Dutch Naval Academy.


RARA AVIS


RARA AVIS is indeed a "rare bird", with Dutch origins, an interim Amercian owner, and now a vessel involved with "troubled youth in France," the RARA AVIS sails from Brest, and is a "global ecological explorer".


SPIRIT of BERMUDA




SPIRIT of BERMUDA is a intrinsic, regional rig, called a "Bermuda sloop" despite having 3 masts. She was built in 2006, and is new to the tall ships fleet.
